Things to Do in and Around Clanfield
Walks on the downs, a country park, cricketing history and village landmarks — how to make the most of Clanfield and its surroundings.
Clanfield may be a small village, but its position on the edge of the South Downs National Park means there is plenty to do outdoors and a good deal of history close at hand.
Queen Elizabeth Country Park
Right next to the village, Queen Elizabeth Country Park is the obvious first stop. It has waymarked walking, cycling and horse-riding trails through beech woodland and chalk downland, a visitor centre, café and picnic areas, and rises to Butser Hill — one of the highest points on the South Downs. The South Downs Way runs through it.
Walk up to Windmill Hill
Across the A3, Windmill Hill rises to 193 metres and is topped by Chalton Windmill, which overlooks Clanfield. The paths up onto the down give wide views back over the village.
Explore the old village
In old Clanfield, the church of St James dates from 1305 and was rebuilt in 1875. Nearby are the restored village pond and a thatched village well — small landmarks that tell the story of the village before the modern estates arrived.
Cricketing history at Broadhalfpenny Down
A short way west, on Hyden Farm Lane towards Hambledon, Broadhalfpenny Down is known as the "Cradle of Cricket" — the 18th-century home of the famous Hambledon Club. The historic Bat & Ball pub stands opposite the ground. Read more in our Broadhalfpenny Down cricket heritage guide.
Parks and play
