The historic heart of the village — St James Church, the village pond and well, thatched cottages and The Rising Sun.
Old Clanfield is the historic core of the village, centred on the church of St James, the restored village pond and a thatched village well. St James dates from 1305 and was rebuilt in 1875; it holds two ancient medieval bells. The parish grew here as a small farming community — the 1929 census recorded a population of just 129.
The Rising Sun sits beside the church in the old village and is one of Clanfield's best-known landmarks, famous locally as "the pub that was rebuilt in one day" in 1969. Thatched cottages, including Smithy Cottage and a thatched cottage on the corner of North Lane, give this part of the village its older, rural character.
Old Clanfield lies on the edge of the South Downs National Park, which borders the village on three sides. It is a popular starting point for walks up towards Windmill Hill and out into the surrounding downland.
